Celebrate Dia de los Muertos with us on November 1st and 2nd!

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a CELEBRATION of Friends and Loved ones who have passed! It’s not a time to mourn or worship the dead. We CELEBRATE the lives of those who have gone before us, and we invite you to come and celebrate with us!

Dia de los Muertos originated centuries ago in Mexico, and is still widely celebrated. People around the world are drawn to the concept and imagery of Mexico's Day of the Dead; the holiday seems to continually gain in popularity as more people learn about it. It is a festive, joyous time of celebration. It is Mexico's most important holiday, which means they invest a lot of time, money and preparation into the celebration, more-so than any other holiday.

For those who did not grow up in a culture that celebrates such a holiday, these practices and rituals might seem odd. But bear in mind that in the US, it is common for people to visit the graves of their family members and friends who have left this earth; to leave flowers and to reconnect with their loved ones. Dia de los Muertos is similar to this common American practice--so you can see that the Day of the Dead is not a big stretch to understand! 

Dia de los Muertos allows the dead to live again. During this time it is believed that the deceased return to their earthly homes to visit and rejoice with their loved ones. The Days of the Dead are celebrated as a way of retaining connections with the unseen world, a world we will all return to one day.

TacoLu will celebrate Dia de los Muertos on Saturday, November 1st. Throughout the last 6 years, we have collected the pictures, stuffed animals, keys, and memories of many of our friends and loved-ones, and placed them on our altar in the Fireplace room. Please join us for an amazing day of remembering and reflecting on November 1st. Bring in a picture or something that will honor your family member or friend while “passing through,” and put it up on the altar. Debbie’s Grandpa would want a pack of Dentyne gum! It was his favorite and he always had a pack in his pocket, so we place it in front of his picture on the altar. Each year we place a pack of cigarettes for Don’s Aunt Mary. Get it? It’s a great way to connect and celebrate!!!

Kids and adults will be able to paint sugar skulls for display at the Lu, or to take home. We will have a special Dia de los Muertos Margarita! Our Staff will have their faces painted to celebrate.

We have lost some pretty amazing people throughout our 6 years at TacoLu, and we think of them all often, but during Dia de los Muertos, we especially honor them and welcome them back. If only for the Holiday.

Tacos For Tata's: Brushed Bold Edition

We did it! Another great Monday night at the Lu with the LuLulemon crew, raising money for the Donna 26.2! Yes, it’s the second time we’ve done it this year, but it’s been changed from a post-race party to an October Kick-Off for the event, which is held in February. “It’s time to begin your training for the Marathon,” kind of thing...

The LuLu and Lu Cru never do anything halfway, so this year’s theme was a really creative way to Celebrate Survivors of Breast Cancer and raise some cash for Donna’s Foundation and the Mayo clinic--working together, they have done some great stuff!! Brushed Bold was the theme this time around and 14 survivors had their body (busts) painted by local artists and then photographed. The final product is stunning!!! 

Debbie had this place looking amazing; Pink pouring out of every light socket and floral arrangement! Liz Stewart did an amazing job with the flowers and they were auctioned off at the end of the night... the Fletcher Drum Line surprised everyone by marching right through the parking lot, up to the back patio and performing several numbers for all to enjoy. It was a nice touch!! 

The food--well, the food was fun. We stepped out of our box a bit... With the exception of the brisket taco, which we never do for these events, we made some changes. The Taco Rosa--which is perfect for this event (it’s pink!! Duh!) had a wasabi/cucumber slaw on it. A slightly pickled cucumber slice for some more color as well. We made a special Shiitake mushroom taco with a whole Shiitake cap on these mini tortillas. The taco had a refried bean schmear, some carmelized red onion and some fresh cheese that I made with some shiitake powder (dehydrated and then ground some Shiitakes) and a little bit of guajillo sauce. Sounds fancy, but really simple!! The best reason to eat at these events, in my opinion, are the Brussel Sprouts! I had these sprouts at Toloache, one of my fave Mexican restaurants in NYC! They are fried, tossed in some Sherry Vinaigrette a little more fresh cheese and some roasted pepitas. Insane, I tell you!!! We also did a version of our street corn, but really they were mini corncob bites... AlleyCakes was there, as usual, supporting us and Donna with some fantastic sweets before and after dinner!! 

I don't have a figure for how much we raised; we’ll be announcing that, but for now, here’s a peek at some of the amazing art from Brushed Bold, and the rest of the evening!! 

Summer Wrap-Up and Events For The Fall

Summer was awesome. Our second summer in the old Homestead and it was truly better than the first. The patio is looking great; it's getting to be THAT time of year out there. We celebrated our 6th anniversary over a rainy weekend in July. The rain doused our plans of a grand Masquerade Ball, complete with all kinds of acrobatic, aerobatic and all around Fun-o-Matic, but it didn't douse a great time inside and under the the tents outside!

6 years! wow. Henry has spent HALF of his life wandering around this place and Lucy, 2/3 of hers... It's a big part of all our lives and it has been a fantastic trip! 

We FINALLY received our Herradura Barrel--the Double Barrel Reposado, and it's one of our best to date! We also had the opportunity to taste and choose a Single Barrel Reposado from Milagro and that also arrived recently. Both tequilas are featured as a cocktail and a really nice sipper (which is the way I recommend drinking it)!

The TacoLu Bangin' Shrimp Bus has hit the road this summer, after a bumpy start this spring. Technical issues, electrical issues, LP gas issues... just about every kind of issue has popped up and we've survived them all (haven't necessarily fixed them all). 

Coming up in September is the Web.com Tour Championship at the Valley Course at TPC, We'll be there with the Bangin' Bus, selling Tacos at the Turn! We're very excited to be back at Sawgrass for this event!

In October, we’re back on the 26.2 with Donna, teaming up again with LuLuLemon for a great fund raiser! The fall is filling up fast! We have Caring Chefs--a great event that I’ve been able to be a part of since 1999.
